Raid Leading Guide
Does what it says on the tin - this is a guide to help people raid lead who may not be used to it. It may also make people appreciate raid leaders more :)
Know your stuff
If the raid leader doesn't know what to do, its usually a bad sign :) You should know pretty much everything there is to know about the bosses, including everything that every class should be doing, not just yourself. You should also be familar with the generalties of the healing required. Make sure you read up on any boss in the instance and be ready to do whichever your group setup works for.
With trash, you should at least know the basics and any particualrly tricky stuff. Remember that it's the raid leader that decides killorder and crowdcontroll etc.
Communication
Make sure everyone knows what you want them to do - if theres only a couple of new people get CLs or class members to explain it in class channel or via whispers instead of boring the raid on TS. You can't blame wipes on people not doing things if they were never told to do so. Make sure theres no confusion over whos doing what or healing who. Get a mic and use it!!! Listen to feedback from players after wipes and suggestions and modify things accordingly.
Killing stuff
After every wipe the pertinant question is 'Why did we wipe ?'. Find out what happened and then find a way of stopping it happening again - do this each time you wipe and eventually you won't and the boss will die :)
Setting up groups
DPS is king. DPS makes fights shorter which means less healing is required and less potential for screw-ups. Always set-up groups for max DPS where ever possible, bearing in mind class synergy.
- Melee = Rogue/Retri paladin/DPS warrior/Feral Druid/Ench Shammie is your preferred melee group. If there is a shaman in the group (which there should be if there's a shaman in the raid) fill the group with people that benefit from WF the most, i.e. 1 warrior with WF is better than giving the other 4 a hunter buff etc.
- Caster = S. Priest/Ele Shammie/Moonkin or BM hunter/2 caster DPS is your preferred caster group.
'Preferred' is a relative term, don't feel constrained by these at all and whats 'preferred' can change from fight to fight.
Remember that spreading out buffs rather than mega buffing a few people leads to more raid dps. In a normal raid there will be at least 3 dps groups so try spreading the buffs over those three, bearing in mind that if you got a moonkin you really want to put it in a group with either a shaman or a shadowpriest. Normally you'd end up with Shaman/Hunter/Casterx3 and Moonkin/S.Priest/casterx3, Shaman/meleex4.
'Admin' stuff
Make sure DKP is being handled by someone. Delegate jobs as needed (healing, slam positions, cube clicking etc) so you can get on with raid leading. Ensure you know if/when people are leaving and try and line-up replacements before hand, again feel free to get someone else to sort this.
Misc
Keep the pace up as much as possible whilst avoiding daft wipes - frequent pauses means people get bored and concentration drops. Get back from wipes quickly and rebuff speedily - you should be ready to go in 5 mins, not 15. Let people know when they've done a good job but similarly don't shirk from telling them when they're sucking :)
If you need to replace people, try to do it as smooth as possible. If there's a short break because you are in need of a replacement for someone, and have not found one yet, try to keep the raid informed a bit. Some people just have nothing better to do for 10 min so they want to know you are still working on finding that replacement.
